Why futsal? The case for small-sided soccer for newcomer youth
People sometimes ask why we chose futsal — indoor, five-a-side soccer — instead of a full outdoor program. The answer is practical, and it's about our players.
It works indoors, year-round
Metro Vancouver rains for half the year. A gym means sessions never cancel, and a predictable routine matters enormously for youth whose lives have had too much unpredictability already.
Everyone touches the ball
With five players a side on a small court, nobody hides and nobody gets left out. A beginner gets fifty touches in a session, not five. Confidence comes fast.
It's the world's game
Most of our players grew up with football, whatever word they used for it. On the court, the game itself is a shared language — a new arrival with no English can be the star of their first session. That first moment of being good at something in a new country is worth more than any icebreaker.
It scales with us
Futsal needs a gym, a ball, and pinnies. That means low costs, which means free programs, which means no youth turned away. As we grow, tournaments and leagues are a natural next step.
