Founded by people who lived the newcomer journey.
Kateb Youth and Community Society is a registered BC non-profit, founded and led by members of the immigrant communities we serve in Metro Vancouver.
Our story
Arriving in a new country as a young person is hard. New language, new school, new everything — and often, nowhere to just be yourself. Our founders lived that experience, and built what they wished had existed.
It started with volunteers, a gym, and a weekly futsal game for immigrant youth. It grew because families kept asking for more — help navigating school, mentors for their teenagers, gatherings that felt like home. Today we work across five areas: settlement support, education & mentorship, culture & community events, youth leadership, and sport & recreation.
Sport opened the door. Belonging is the whole house.
Our mission
To support the healthy settlement and development of immigrant and newcomer youth in Metro Vancouver through community, mentorship, culture, leadership, and recreation.
Belonging
Every young person deserves a community that shows up for them.
Accessibility
Cost never keeps a youth out. Our programs are free or subsidized, always.
Community leadership
Our mentors, coaches, and organizers come from the same communities as our youth.
Growth
We measure success in confidence built, friendships made, and leaders developed.
Accountability
We're a small organization that takes governance seriously.
